On 9 October 2011, H.E. Mr. Zhang Xianyi, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh gave a speech entitled "Chinese Economy and Its Effect on World Economic Growth" at Bangladesh Defense Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC). Around 200 officers from 22 countries including Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Turkey, United States and South Africa, and Senior Colonel Li Chenglin, Defense Attaché of Chinese Embassy were present.

Ambassador Zhang gave an in-depth introduction of China's economic and social development achievements, China's contribution to the world economic development, China's peaceful development, China-Bangladesh economic and trade cooperation. Ambassador Zhang said that since the reform and opening up policy took its shape in the late 1970s, China has experienced all-round development through deepening reform, industrialization, urbanization and agricultural modernization. Over the past 33 years, China's GDP has been enjoying a 9.5% annual growth. China has become the largest exporter and the second largest importer in the world. Though growing fast, China is still a developing country with large population, weak economic base, unbalanced social security system and acute environment and resource constraints. In the ever changing world, Chinese people will stick to the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, push forward the policy of reform and opening up, draw on the practices of other countries, improve the socialist market economy, so as to open up brighter prospects for China's development.

China, as the largest developing country, has made active contributions to the stable development of the world economy. Since its entry into the WTO in 2001, China has imported goods worth nearly US$750 billion every year, and created over 14 million jobs for those exporting countries and regions. In recent years, China has contributed over 10% to world economic growth every year. In 2010, this figure was 30%. In the financial crisis in 1997 and 2008, China took active part in maintaining regional and global economic stability, and made important contribution to the safeguarding of regional and international economic stability and development.

Ambassador Zhang said, China will adhere to a road of peaceful development. China should develop itself through upholding world peace and contribute to world peace through its own development. It should achieve development with its own efforts and by carrying out reform and innovation; at the same time, it should open itself to the outside and learn from other countries. It should seek mutual benefit and common development with other countries in keeping with the trend of economic globalization, and it should work together with other countries to build a harmonious world of durable peace and common prosperity. A prosperous and developing China, a democratic, harmonious and stable country under the rule of laws will make more contribution to the world.

Ambassador Zhang said, China-Bangladesh economic cooperation has been developing smoothly in recent years. Positive progress has been obtained in areas such as trade, investment, mega projects cooperation all made great progress in recent years. China will further strengthen the economic and trade relation between the two countries, and make joint efforts with Bangladesh in promoting the "Closer Comprehensive Partnership of Cooperation".

After the speech, Ambassador Zhang answered the questions from DSCSC course members concerning Chinese investment in Bangladesh, Sino-Bangladesh bilateral trade, regional connectivity, RMB exchange rate, and Chinese involvement in countering global crisis, etc.
