Bangladesh reaffirms adherence to the one-China principle and its respect for China's sovereignty and security, a Bangladeshi influential minister told Chinese media on Sunday.

In an exclusive interview with Chinese media, Bangladeshi Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Faruk Khan said "We believe in one-China principle. Bangladesh will continue to abide by the one-China principle.”

Khan's comment came after the result of the election in the Taiwan region on Saturday.

Khan, who is also a senior leader of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party and chairman of Bangladesh's Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, said that Taiwan's elections are China's internal affair.

"We support China's legitimate and justified position on Taiwan question, and work together with China to defend regional peace, stability and prosperity," Khan added.

Noting that Bangladeshi side attaches very importance to developing Bangladesh-China relations, Khan said they will extend their support to China time to time.
