Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu's Enunciation of China's Solemn Position on the US Government's Announcement of Arms Sales to Taiwan
2011/09/21

Despite repeated solemn representations from the Chinese side, the US Government announced on September 21 an advanced arms sales package to Taiwan which totalled US$ 5.852 billion, including the upgrade of its existing F-16 A/B fighter jets, components and parts of military aircraft and relevant training programs. The Chinese Government and people express strong indignation at the decision. Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun has been ordered to summon US Ambassador to China Gary Locke to lodge strong protest to the US side. Chinese Ambassador to the US Zhang Yesui also protested to the US side in Washington.

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China. The Taiwan question, an internal affair of China, bears on China's sovereignty, territorial integrity and core interests and is dear to the hearts of the 1.3 billion Chinese people. China's position of firmly opposing any foreign government's arms sales to Taiwan is consistent and clear-cut. Paying no heed to China's repeated solemn representations, the US side keeps selling advanced arms to Taiwan under the pretext of the Taiwan Relations Act. Its action has grossly violated the three China-US joint communiqués, especially the principles enshrined in the August 17 Communiqué. It constitutes a serious interference in China's internal affairs and severely undermines China's national security and reunification. It also impairs China-US relations and the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits. The Chinese Government and people will by no means accept it. The erroneous practice of the US will inevitably cause damage to China-US relations and bilateral exchanges and cooperation in the military, security and other fields, and the responsibility completely rests with the US side.

No one can shake the resolve of the Chinese Government and people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity and combat outside interference. We urge the US side to fully recognize the great sensitivity and gravity of arms sales to Taiwan, respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity in real earnest, abide by the three China-US joint communiqués and basic norms governing international relations, take immediate and effective measures to correct its error by revoking relevant arms sales plan, stopping selling arms to Taiwan and ceasing its military links with Taiwan so as to avoid further damage to the stable development of China-US relations as well as the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations.
