Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Qin Gang's Remarks on the Cancelation of US Secretary of State Rice's Visit to China
2009/01/05

Q: It's said that US Secretary of State Rice has canceled her Asian trip, and thus would not visit China as planned. Could you confirm?

A: During his phone conversation with President Hu Jintao on late January 4, US President Bush said that due to tensions in the Middle East, Secretary Rice would have to stay in the US to handle relevant issues. The US has decided to send Deputy Secretary of State Negroponte to visit China and commemorate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

We understand this decision by the US and welcome Deputy Secretary Negroponte to visit China.
